Chapter 15

Brooke

“How do you know Emanuel?” I demanded.

His shoulders visibly dropped as he hung his head and pinched the bridge of his nose. “I’m working undercover. He’s my target.”

“What?” I breathed.

“Can we go back to camp and sit down so I can explain?” he asked.

“No way. You’re not going anywhere until you explain,” I said firmly.

“Brooke,” he pleaded and took two steps in my direction.

I pulled the gun he had given me from the waistband of my shorts and pointed it at him. “I told you not to come any closer.” I didn’t want to shoot him, but I would if I had to.

He held his hands up in the universal gesture of surrender. “Okay, okay. I won’t come any closer.”

“Start talking, Liam, if that’s even your name,” I spat.

“My real name is William Drake, but I go by Liam. I work for a company that specializes in tracking down and arresting criminals other agencies have had a difficult time apprehending.”

“So, you’re a cop?”

“No, I’m not affiliated with any type of law enforcement or government agency. I work for an independent company that is frequently hired by federal agencies.”

“How did you end up on Kasey’s boat as a crew member?” I demanded.

He sighed and dropped to his ass in the sand. With his arms draped over his bent knees, he started talking. “My company has been trying to take down Emanuel for over a year. Every time we get close, he manages to get away. We can’t just go and put him in handcuffs. We needed to catch him in the act with irrefutable evidence. To make a long story short, when Kasey bought a superyacht and booked plane tickets to Fiji, Emanuel made travel arrangements to Fiji for the same time frame a few hours later. We thought the ship really belonged to Emanuel and he was planning to use it to transport illegal goods. Then, Kasey posted an ad looking to hire a crew member. It was the perfect opportunity to catch him in the act.”

“Emanuel and I broke up weeks ago. If you were following him so closely, you had to know that,” I said.

“We thought it was a ruse. I didn’t realize it was the truth until we were well on our way to the islands. At that point, there was nothing I could do until we arrived in Auckland.”

So it was true. The papers I found were exactly what I thought they were.

“What papers?” Liam asked, sounding far too eager for my liking.

Shit. I didn’t mean to say that out loud.

“I’m not discussing that with you,” I huffed, annoyed with myself for blurting out information I didn’t want to share.

“That’s fine,” he said, rising to his feet. “Now that you know the truth, will you put the gun down?”

“How do I know it’s the truth? Everything you said could be a load of bullshit.”

He visibly rankled. “You want proof?” he shouted. “Fine, I’ll get you proof.”

With that, he stomped into the lagoon and marched straight to the boat without ever looking back.
